Pit bull ban fails

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Two weeks ago, Jackson City Councilman Jeff Weill thought he had enough support on the council to outlaw pit bulls in the city.
On Monday, he could not even get a second to his motion for a ban on the dogs.
Two proposed plans to impose strict, breed-specific limits on pit bulls failed to make it to a vote in the council's rules committee. Opposition came from the city's animal control chief and about a dozen angry dog owners.
Darrell Scott, a south Jackson pit bull owner, called the effort "stupid."
The proposed ban on pit bulls was stirred by last month's mauling death of 5-year-old Anataisa Bingham in Terry.
